Party stores and decorators inflate their balloons quickly--time is money.
I wonder how many of us favor a slower inflation rate. I do. When I use a pump, I put a restrictor on the nozzle that reduces the air flow. With a slower inflation rate I can squeeze the balloon to push out the neck, stretch the bulb or force air to inflate the tip of long balloons like GL's or workers. I can also feel when the balloon gets tight and have time to pull it off the pump. When I am feeling nervous, it is gives time to check for defects.
I do the same when I inflate by mouth.
Then, I let my balloons sit for awhile to stretch. If they feel softer--and they often do--I take off the clip or untie it and add a few more breaths of air. For older balloons or balloons that have been inflated multiple times, this is a dangerous time. But it also an exciting way to get huge balloons; sort of foreplay.
I also find it is also a good way to stretch out new balloons for a second inflation.
