      Same here...

      Occasions for popping a rare.
I can only pop balloons when I'm alone in the house.

        Me too....

Not only when I have the house to myself but also when the neighbours are out as the walls between our houses are thin.

Same. Living in a townhouse sucks. But no one has complained yet. I've put a pillow under a balloon to try and muffle the noise a bit. At least the noises aren't as sharp as they used to be when I first moved in.

Same here! I've been craving some good loud pops for a while now but I don't want to alarm the neighbors!

Get a friends help or rig up something to pop a balloon slowly (a slow pump, etc). This will give you a chance to hear how loud it gets. Usually the sound doesn't carry, especially smaller balloons.

We live in a house with a rather big garden so theoretically neighbors cannot hear anything but I’m always worrying about the occasional questions. I did some tests: I slightly over-inflated a 14” balloon and put it onto a cold soldering iron. I turned the iron on and went out to the terrace. After about half a minute I can only hear something weak muffled noise; it was not a definite pop. Then, when the iron got cold again I repeated the test but I went to the other end of the garden. I couldn’t hear anything, I thought the iron did not work or the balloon had floated away. No, when I entered the house the shreds of the second balloons were around the iron. So, the test result was perfect but anyway my fear of being caught have not disappeared yet…
