    Pre-stretching balloons with water

Hi guys, I was wondering if pre-stretching the balloons with water would be a good idea since I haven't any pumps and being faster than inflating several times with the mouth.

It would probably work. There are two potential drawbacks I can think of:
    1. The water could wash out some of the powder inside that’s used to keep the latex from sticking to itself.
    2. It might be a good idea to make sure it dries out as much as possible before storing or keeping inflated.

      Hi,
About the point number 1: could it also causes an accidental pop?
About the point number 2: maybe I could pre-inflating the balloons many hours before using so I can let them drying, using them and when the session ends up store them.

        1. I have had a balloon pop because the latex was badly stuck to other latex. This was not a result of filling it with water, though, and I’m only speculating about the effects of using water.
        2. Good idea.

          Hi ,

I have no experience with this myself, but I got an idea on how to eliminate the above concerns:

Why not simply turn the balloon inside out before you fill it with water. This would leave the original inner side untouched, and after you let the water out you can simply turn the balloon back again making it easy for it to dry up.

          Good luck

          Sincerely
          Susie

That's a good idea. In addition, you can use hot water, it can stretch the latex easier...

              Thanks guys,
I was worrying if the water could damages the latex and consequently pops the balloon, but I realize that it isn't.
Turning the balloons inside out could be a good idea, but to be honest, it scares me a bit, isn't it dangerous? Won't the balloon pop?
About the hot water, I assume it shouldn't be as hot as much or it risks to damage the balloon, right?

Turning the balloon inside out shouldn't cause popping.

You could also apply a bit of baby powder to the inside if necessary.

Water will degrade the latex over time, just like air does. It’ll stick to itself if it dries while wet. This could ruin the balloon. It’s okay if it’s just a temporary thing though. I find balloons get huge when filled with water. Especially if you’re doing it in a bath full of water. Then the balloon is completely supported.

Also, don't forget, to only use purified water, or water that's been boiled then left to completely cool down until it's completely cold. All tap-waters contain chemicals (chlorine, et al) and other assorted minerals that might affect the latex in some way.

Boiling doesn’t actually get rid of most the chemicals, but the concentration is low enough that I doubt it’ll effect the latex anymore than pure water would. Also buying enough distilled water to fill lots of balloons will be expensive. And you would need some sort of pump to fill them. Tap water is fine.
