Is it harmful to consume Liquid Nitrogen?

    Hi..
We all knew that Liquid nitrogen is mostly used to preserve the food. I have a question that is it harmful for humans to consume liquid Nitrogen?

You should newer consume liquid nitrogen.
    The reason is obvious.
Liquid nitrogen is very very cold. Minus 195 degrees celsius (minus 320 fahrenheit)
If you look up on youtube and see what liquid nitrogen can do to a rose imagine what it will do when it comes into contact with the tissue in your mouth and throad.
    So do not do it

In a liquid state.....well yeah it’s very likely to harm you.

Instant cold burn. Don’t touch it with your bare hands, let alone consume it. Nitrogen as a gas is fine. (As long as you don’t breath pure nitrogen for more than a few seconds because you’ll pass out from lack of oxygen) May I ask why you’re asking? Do you intend to fill balloons with nitrogen or something?

          Simple answer: ABSO-FRIGGING-LUTELY IT'S BAD!

Don't ever, ever, EVER do this! You'll kill yourself, by paralysis of the throat and lungs, and it'll feel like you're choking from the inside of your body out.

No one should need to have contact with Liquid Nitrogen, except under very exclusive scientific purposes, or possibly if you're a teacher of science/chemisty, or the like.

And whilst we're on it, DON'T use Nitrogen gas to fill balloons with either! It's a highly dangerous gas, if you don't know what you're doing, and NOT something to fool around with!

          Seriously, do NOT do this!

Filling balloons with nitrogen is a lot safer than with oxygen or hydrogen as some of the people on here talk about doing. Most the air we breath is nitrogen (roughly 78%). It’s non flammable and doesn’t react with much. That said, any compressed gas can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Liquid nitrogen is very dangerous if you touch it without enough safety equipment (e.g. safety gloves) und you should NEVER consume it. It would most likely kill you either by suffication or interior bleeding due to very hurtful freeze burn.

Nitrogen gas should be perfectly fine. It's the main compenent of air after all. But you could sufficate if you breath in to much. Even though that could be said about every other gas but oxigen or an oxigen mix like air. Just remember to actually breath fresh air and you would be fine.

A couple of years ago someone "survived" drinking a shot of it. Life changing internal injuries but still alive. Everyone else who tried died. It's crazy dangerous. If you want something like that, dry ice is a lot safer but still dangerous and probably fatal if consumed.

Re: Is it harmful to consume Liquid Nitrogen?

The air we breathe is composed of approximately 20.9% oxygen and 78% nitrogen with the remaining volume being trace gases (argon, carbon dioxide, etc).
LIQUID nitrogen is nitrogen that's liquid at -196 degrees Celcius (or -320F) at atmospheric pressure. So as you'd find it it's very very cold. It will freeze human organ tissue solid and cause it to fracture. Ever see a banana dipped in liquid N2? You can hammer a nail with it and then the banana shatters like glass. Not a good thing to expose your esophagus to. Long story short, consuming liquid nitrogen will kill you painfully and mercilessly. There would be no saving you. The pain would make you wish you were dead. You'd beg for the sweet mercy of death.
Gaseous nitrogen can be used to fill balloons. Gas companies rent/sell the cylinders of compressed nitrogen and professional decorators use it because it fills balloons fast and doesn't oxidize the latex. Be careful about releasing too much of it in an enclosed/indoor environment because even though it makes up 78% of the air we breathe it can quickly displace the essential nurturing oxygen and cause asphyxiation. It has the same density as the air we breathe so unlike helium it will not rise and collect on the ceiling.
Better yet, don't use it to fill balloons at all. Use good old air! If you're the type of person that would ask if it's safe to consume liquid N2 maybe you should stay away from N2 altogether. Make sure those caps are on your wall outlets and don't put your tongue on cold metal outside. Stay away from exhaust pipes on vehicles and don't touch hot stove elements!
